Hong Kong HOTELS Reviews

Hotel Review: J Plus Hotel by YOO

February 14, 2017

In a city dominated by luxury hotel chains and vaunting skyscrapers, J Plus Hotel by YOO was Hong Kong’s first boutique hotel. Over twelve years later the award-winning hotel is still attracting a fashionable, young crowd.

Design-lovers, digital nomads and bloggers are drawn to the quirky, cutting-edge style and the exclusive perks that cater towards the needs of the modern traveller. Plus, this boutique hotel is located in the vibrant heart of Causeway Bay.

Originally conceived by renowned French designer, Phillipe Stark, J Plus Hotel by YOO is part of the collection of YOO Hotels & Resorts that intend to surprise and delight guests. Last year, the hotel underwent a HK$10 million dollar refurbishment for a fresh, new look.

Its unconventional, avant-garde style suits contemporary Hong Kong – wandering into the lobby bedecked with eclectic furniture (such as a golden chair shaped like a giant hand) feels as if you are walking into an art gallery. Actually, if you venture a little further into the hotel you will discover a dedicated space used to showcase regularly curated exhibitions.

The playful design concept extends to the 31 luxurious studios and 24 spacious suites. It’ easy to see why this hotel attracts young, creative types – the suites feel more like tailor-made ‘living spaces’ than cookie-cutter hotel rooms. The public areas of the hotel are created to encourage a communal atmosphere – for example, engaging conversations with fellow travellers can easily be sparked over complimentary wine served in the evenings.

Checking-in is a breeze and before you know it you’ll be comfortably settled into your suite. It’s a 24/7 concierge service and the staff are more than happy to help you with ordering a taxi, booking tickets or making restaurant reservations.

Room: The Suite Plus

The suite plus accommodation is surprising spacious for a high-rent city like Hong Kong, an impressive 780 Sq Ft to be precise. The room certainly feels like a ‘home away from home’ and there’s a bright, airy feel to the space. There’s a luxurious queen-sized bed with plush goose down duvets, a dreamy marble en-suite, as well as a lounge and dining area decorated with eclectic pieces and pops of colour. There’s a large desk too, which is ideal for bloggers or those who work remotely.

Plus, all the amenities you’d expect from a rental apartment including flat screen TV with cable and a DVD home theatre with surround sound music system if you want to kick back one evening. There’s even a small kitchen fully equipped with appliances (refrigerator, electric stove, microwave) just in case you want to whip up a storm in the kitchen (or, at the very least cook some popcorn to enjoy whilst watching a film). You also have  complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, as well as a fully stocked mini-bar.

Around the hotel

Guests can make the most of the range of complimentary facilities on offer. HANDY smartphones are provided for non-stop connectivity, high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a stylish lobby and open-air terrace perfect for socialising, on-tap refreshments (tea, coffee and juice), a full-equipped gym, laundry services and a concept store for in-room purchases. If you’re still not convinced – pop down to the lobby for complimentary breakfasts, afternoon tea cakes and, in the evenings, guests can mingle over a glass of wine.

HANDY Smartphone

The use of the HANDY Smartphone is free-of-charge and yet another example of how J Plus Hotel by YOO understands the needs of millennials who place great value on connectivity. With HANDY you can stay connected anytime and anywhere with unlimited local and international calls (depending on location), 3G and interactive map to help you get around Hong Kong. It even has its own bespoke city guide and exclusive perks including discounts and ticketing offers.

In the heart of Causeway Bay there is no shortage of amazing cafes and restaurants to choose from. J Plus Hotel by YOO can even arrange to deliver food from local eateries up to your room.

Located on Hong Kong Island, Causeway Bay is one of the busiest neighbours in the city – jam-packed with shops, cafes and restaurants. Causeway Bay has a reputation as the best shopping district with department stores, high-end malls and fashion retailers aplenty. The hotel is walking distance from Victoria Park, Times Square shopping mall, the popular Central district and the trendy backstreets of Wan Chai.

The verdict?

J-Plus Hotel by YOO is ideal for visitors who want to immerse themselves in the buzz of the city and to be in close walking distance to public transport, shops, cafes and restaurants. The suite plus feels just like coming back to the comfort of your own apartment at the end of the day. The trendy design and persoanlised facilities also mean it’s the ideal place for creatives, bloggers and digital nomads to base themselves whilst exploring Hong Kong.
